Think, before you vote

March 6, 2008

It’s Saturday, March 8, 2008.

You know on this day your vote will decide which party will become the government of the day for the next 5 years.

And what it does and not do within that 5 years will have great impact in your life in the immediate term and in the future.

So before you cast your vote, think hard on the matters that will help you come to the right conclusion and make the right decision. Your well-being, as well as your family’s, is very much in your hands.

Also know this, the government of the day, whether it likes it or not, represents you and works for you.

It should serve you and not lord over you. You are the boss and the power; not the government of the day. Simply because it is you, through your ballot, who give it the mandate to do the things that you want it to do – on your behalf, for your behalf.

Consider this, too.

50 years have come and gone. Many progresses have been made as well as broken. Are you happy with the results?

Are you and your family enjoying the fruits of your blood, sweat and tears and the taxes that you have been paying? Do you and your family feel safe? Are you and your family better off now than before? Is your collective future looking bright?

Your power of X is your power to change things if you know deep in your heart that they are not going your way. Vote for change if you have to. Only use your power of X wisely and write it neatly within the box.

50 years of independence, there should be many other questions to ask. But if you can confine them to just the 10 below you will know what to do with your X on the ballot paper.

1. <!–[endif]–>Can this government be trusted?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>2. <!–[endif]–>Will this government uphold our constitution?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>3. <!–[endif]–>Will this government fight corruption?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>4. <!–[endif]–>Will this government clean up the judiciary and police?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>5. <!–[endif]–>Will this government eradicate race-based politics?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>6. <!–[endif]–>Will this government be fair, transparent and meritocratic?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>7. <!–[endif]–>Will this government respect our civil rights?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>8. <!–[endif]–>Will this government stop increasing prices?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>9. <!–[endif]–>Will this government be arrogant?

<!–[if !supportLists]–>10. <!–[endif]–>Will this government listen to me, the rakyat?
