“Please take your seats and don’t run [away]” – King jokes with Parliamentarians, praises removal of GST, move to cut Federal spending

* Cheap drama – Najib’s father would turn over in his grave: Umno’s flip-flop walkout makes world headlines

KUALA LUMPUR― The Yang di-Pertuan Agong today demonstrated his humour during his opening speech of the 14th Parliament today, telling the MPs not to “run”.

“Ladies and gentleman, please take your seat and don’t run,” a smiling Sultan Muhammad V said, leaving the Dewan Rakyat members in stitches.

It is unclear what the King was hinting at, but the quip was seemingly targeted at the Opposition members who staged a walkout yesterday, after expressing dissatisfaction over the selection of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof. -MALAY MAIL

Agong praises move to scrap GST, revise federal spending

PUTRAJAYA’S moves to abolish the goods and services tax (GST) and revise government expenditure in light of the country’s financial situation were commended by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V today.

In the royal address in Parliament, the Agong also welcomed the new government’s efforts to strengthen transparency by disclosing the nation’s true financial position.

“I welcome the approach to restore transparency and re-examine the expenditure, costs of projects and managing its finances with more care.

“To combat costs of living issues, I support moves to abolish GST, stabilise fuel prices and give aid to the lower-income groups to lighten Malaysians’ burdens,” said Sultan Muhammad V in the address to Dewan Rakyat members at the opening of the first parliament sitting after the May 9 elections.
