SHAH ALAM, Aug 4 — PKR candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni has been declared the official winner of the Sungai Kandis by-election, though by a far lower majority caused in part by poor voter turnout at the polls.

In the Election Commission’s (EC) final tally of 25,282 votes, the local-born ustaz racked up 15,427 votes, and besting his closest rival in the three-way contest, Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Lokman Noor Adam by a majority of 5,842 votes. Lokman got 9,585 votes.

The unknown independent candidate K. Murthy received a total of 97 votes, lower than the unofficial count that recorded his tally at 102.

There were a total of 173 spoilt votes.
PKR had aimed to increase its majority in this by-election, the first to be held after the May 9 general election.

But today’s voter turnout was far below its target and even the EC’s hope for 80 per cent.

The EC’s at 4pm today, before polling closed at 5.30pm, showed only 45 per cent of the Selangor state constituency’s 51,230 registered voters had turned out to vote.

The late Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei from PKR had defended his seat in the May 9 general election with a majority of 12,480 votes in a four-cornered fight against BN, PAS and Parti Rakyat Malaysia candidates.

The by-election was called following Mat Shuhaimi’s death from cancer on July 2.
