Witness testimony echoes Apandi’s famous chart

May 10, 2019

NAJIB TRIAL | The Kuala Lumpur High Court has heard evidence regarding funds transferred to former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank account and SRC International, which corroborates with a flow chart shown to the press three years ago by former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Maybank Kuala Lumpur branch assistant manager Halijah Abdul Wahab today testified that Permai Binaraya Sdn Bhd had transferred RM27 million on July 8, 2014 to Najib’s account with AmBank.

Permai Binaraya is a subsidiary of privately-held Putra Perdana Construction Sdn Bhd (PPC), which in turn is a subsidiary of Putrajaya Perdana Bhd.

The witness also testified that PPC had transferred RM140 million to SRC International Sdn Bhd on Dec 12, 2014. SRC International is a former 1MDB subsidiary. Najib is being tried for receiving RM42 million in return for helping SRC International secure a RM4 billion loan from KWAP.

Both the transactions which the prosecution asked Halijah to confirm were outlined in one of two flow charts which Apandi (photo) held up for photographers during a press conference in January 2016.

At the press conference, the then attorney-general declared that he was clearing Najib of all wrongdoing in regard to money transferred into the latter’s accounts.

Najib had been investigated for receiving RM2.6 billion (US$681 million), purportedly as a political donation from the Saudi royal family, as well as RM42 million originating from SRC International. Apandi then ceased investigations.

At the time, the two charts flashed by Apandi were the only significant official evidence regarding how suspiciously large amounts of money ended up in Najib’s AmBank accounts.

The flashing of the charts to the press was widely considered a major gaffe because it exposed the previously unknown role of PPC and its group of companies in the 1MDB affair.

Permai Binaraya was incorporated in June 2014, a month before it moved RM27 million into Najib’s account.

There are also questions as to why SRC International – which was set up to invest in the energy industry abroad – had pumped millions into PPC.

On April 24, AmBank staff R Uma Devi had testified in court that RM35 million was transferred from SRC International to PPC on July 8, 2014. This transaction was also reflected in the chart held up by Apandi. – Mkini
