Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had a jocular retort to what his predecessor Najib Razak said today.
PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad had a jocular response today to former prime minister Najib Razak’s declaration of shock at a court decision in the RM42 million SRC International corruption case.
“He was shocked? I am shocked that he is shocked,” Mahathir said.
The High Court earlier today had ordered that Najib enter his defence on all seven charges of corruption.
But Mahathir alleged that “the whole world knows Najib is guilty”. He added: “But we have to follow the rule of law; we sent him to face the court to see if he has a case.”
Najib’s lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had said his client had expected an acquittal for all charges after facts of the case were rebutted through submissions to the courts.
Mahathir dismissed claims that he had interfered in Najib’s case, saying his accusers should provide proof to back up his claims.
“I never interfere with the courts so much so during my time the court decided to regard my party as illegal,” he said, referring to a court decision which led to Umno being deregistered during his first stint as prime minister.
“I didn’t fight the court, I went through the proper way,” he said.
